Abstract:
The study site was thought to have a moderate archaeological potential for the Bronze Age. The study sites archaeological potential for the Iron Age, Roman, Saxon and medieval periods was thought to be low. The sites archaeological potential for the post-medieval period was thought to be limited. Remains associated with a substantial residential property of probable 18th century origin 'Battersea House' may be present together with the remains of an early industrial complex 'Thomas Whiffen's Drug Factory'. The survival of archaeological deposits on the study site was thought to have been significantly compromised by previous development. 'Soft' archaeological deposits were now likely to survive only in areas outside of former and existing building footprints. Structural/masonry archaeological deposits may have survived outside of former and existing building footprints and beneath such footprints in a truncated and fragmentary state. The proposed development included a basement car park, which would effectively remove any surviving archaeological deposits from the site. Overall, while it was clear that archaeological remains could potentially occur on the study site, it was clear that such remains were likely to be limited in date range, quality and extent. In particular there was no evidence to suggest that archaeological remains of national or regional importance were present. [Au(adp)]
