Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site as offices and residential housing. The site was once part of the extensive Caterham/Coulsdon Common, which appeared to have been poor quality grazing land until between 1820 and the 1850s when the commons were inclosured. There were no traces of occupation before the barracks and the only archaeological finds appeared to be stray losses. The only archaeological sites of any significance were the burial mounds on Farthing Down and there was a small possibility that others may have survived on the extensive commons lands. [Au(adp)] |
