Abstract: |
The assessment identified that according to current research the bulk of the study area lay within the post-medieval suburbs with the school building laying within the medieval suburbs which expanded to the east of the late Saxon town from the 1st century. Cartographic evidence suggested that the main property boundaries in existence in the 18th century had survived and that little development had taken place within the study area during the last 250 years, which would have increased the likely survival of any potential archaeological deposits. Post-medieval garden terraces, shown on a map of the 18th century, were still visible on the ground and it was possible that the landscaping of the slope to create these terraces may have impacted on any potential archaeological deposits in that area.
