Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of the 50.8ha site, currently being promoted for redevelopment through the review of the Dacorum Local Plan. Examination of the evidence indicated that although the study site was large and occupied a chalk geological base, topographic factors suggested that the study site was unlikely to have been settled and farmed on any significant scale until the late medieval or early post-medieval period. Soil and cropmarks identified in the County SMR had been identified as components of the field pattern shown on the 1843 Tithe Map and so were of very limited archaeological interest. As a result, only the possible alignment of a Roman Road, postulated along the line of Chaulden Lane, and the general background evidence for intensive agricultural exploitation of the landscape in the Roman period from nearby Roman villas was likely to have influenced the archaeological potential of the study site.
