Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed redevelopment site identified that it lay opposite the former location of the St. Thomas Hospital, which was founded in 1281 and removed in the early 19th century. No significant archaeological finds had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, although evidence of medieval and post-medieval occupation had been discovered during construction work at several properties along the nearby Upper High Street. The application site itself lay 500m from the street frontage, in an area unlikely to have been occupied by early structures. It was concluded that the site had a low archaeological potential, and that the construction of the existing building was likely to have had a major impact on any deposits. No further archaeological work was recommended. [AIP] |
