Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an office development. Roman remains had previously been recorded in the vicinity, including a tile kiln, a road and a mosaic, and the north-west corner of the proposal site was known to have lain over the site of a medieval church. During the evaluation, Roman deposits were observed within two of the six test-pits excavated, and a Roman pit was found. Occupation deposits included part of a Roman road, courtyard or alleyway. An intrusive feature of unknown date, the fill of which contained 20th century bricks and Roman pottery, was also observed. This may have represented part of the Western Stream, which had been scoured out and backfilled during the construction of Sudbury House in the 1960s. It was concluded that in situ Roman deposits had survived in one part of the site, but that later deposits had presumably been truncated by the construction of Sudbury House. [AIP]
