Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with the extension and improvement of hotel and golfing facilities, at a site which lay 130-300m to the south of a group of cropmarks, which probably represented the remains of prehistoric pits and circular buildings. Two areas had been identified within the development for an intensive watching brief. Groundworks in these areas took place under continual archaeological observation, whilst the watching brief elsewhere within the site was intermittent. There was no evidence that archaeological remains had existed in any of the areas observed. This may have been due to landscaping undertaken as part of the golf course development. However, no artefacts other than modern golf balls were recovered from the topsoil, and it was concluded that the site had possibly not been subject to intensive human activity prior to the modern period.
