Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a study area of c. 150 square kilometres was undertaken as part of the preparation towards producing an Environmental Statement, in connection with the proposed development of a new coal mine known as the Witham Prospect. Approximately 690 SMR entries existed for the study area, of which 17 were also SAMs, and a number were Listed Buildings. The sites and finds ranged from individual artefacts such as pottery and flint tools, to cropmarks of prehistoric or Roman settlements and field systems, and buildings or features of more recent date, such as smithies, dovecotes and brickworks recorded on 19th century maps. Saxon and medieval settlement had probaby been confined to within existing villages, with the exception of a few deserted villages and moated sites. Listed Buildings were also, in the main, concentrated within existing villages, except for outlying 18th century farms and industrial buildings. Apart from a few later medieval timber-framed buildings and medieval churches, the bulk of the Listed Buildings were of the local red brick tradition, dating from the early 18th century onwards. However, it was noted that, as with archaeological remains, further fieldwork would undoubtedly record further buildings of historic interest. Although there were no designated Historic Parks and Gardens, Historic Battlefields or Historic Landscapes within the study area, the former park at Ossington was considered to be of interest. It was anticipated that when specific areas for potential development had been identified, further fieldwork would be undertaken. This would allow a more detailed assessment of the impact of the scheme to be made, and mitigation strategies to be proposed. [Au(adp)]
