Abstract:
Geophysical survey was undertaken within several parcels of land situated on the Tremough Campus. Previous gradiometer survey had located a number of enclosures, pits, ditches and other anomalies of archaeological potential. Most of these were concentrated in a field to the north-east of the campus and were suggestive of former settlement activity. Whilst the place name 'Tremough' indicated possible medieval settlement, there were no documented sites or finds of archaeological interest within the application area. Gradiometry was undertaken, within areas specified by the client, with the aim of locating and defining any anomalies of possible archaeological interest. This geophysical survey continued from previous survey work and formed part of a wider archaeological evaluation being undertaken by Cornwall Archaeological Unit in advance of the development of the campus. Gradiometry located numerous linear, curvilinear and pit-type anomalies of clear archaeological interest. Many of the linear responses represented former field boundaries and the data contained several anomalies characteristic of the substantial walled field boundaries commonly found in Cornwall. A group of curvilinear responses in the westernmost survey area appeared to form a number of enclosures. Other responses were detected that may have been archaeological but which could have been the product of former trackways, drains and recent bonfires. The ferrous responses of two pipes/services were recorded at the western edge of the application area. [Au(abr)]
