Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the demolition of the St Margaret's Baths. Construction of the baths in the 1960s had caused considerable disturbance to the area, however, a Roman building and human remains of medieval date were reported at the time. Monitoring of the groundworks identified areas of lesser disturbance and uncovered quantities of redeposited human bone, presumably disturbed during the original construction of the Baths. A cobbled surface dating to the Roman period was revealed sealed by a deposit containing an assemblage of domestic Roman remains. Undated or possible medieval deposits were recorded across the site and were interpreted as buried soils or 'dark earth'. Medieval pottery recovered throughout the investigation area confirmed the presence of activity during that period. Several undated deposits confirmed further activity on the site. The demolition of the sauna block revealed shallow foundations and may have allowed better survival of archaeological deposits, although none were identified during the investigations. [Au(abr)]
