Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken in the Stoneleigh Road car park area of a development at Hillswood, Chertsey in September 1996. Three areas were observed; in the Eastern Car Park Area two brick wall foundations were seen, these were thought to relate in some way to either the present Botley's mansion, or to a house with formal gardens shown in the general vicinity on the Rocque map published in 1768 (though the information was collected over a number of years prior to 1768). In the Western Car Park Area a large hole had been infilled with material from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, this comprised building material and kiln wasters. Drains of unusually sophisticated construction and an area of brick and rubble were also recorded. The drains were not normal land drains, they were considered to be of the type one would expect to find associated with formal gardens, this would agree with the idea that there were previously formal gardens in the area. It was implied that the kilns which produced the waster material recovered were of earlier date than the gardens, these presumably being taken out of use when the new mansion was built in the 1760s. The depth of overburden would suggest that significant landscaping had been undertaken. A third area studied revealed the hard-core base of the original 1760s entrance carriageway, with an associated drain. [AIP]
