Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment established that the complex was constructed in 1940. Two small houses and gardens had occupied a part of the Whitefield Road frontage from about 1840 and had been demolished. The northern boundary of the site was formed by a mineral railway embankment which gave access to the Speedwell Pit in the late 19th century. The site was surrounded by early engineering works, the Atlas Locomotive Works, and early collieries and railways of the 19th century. The engineering works and collieries had been demolished and replaced by modern industrial units. [Au(abr)] |
