Abstract: |
The work comprised the monitoring of seven trenches within the proposed location of the turbine bases. A further trench was located outside the area of the turbine bases so as to investigate a possible 'platform' on the route of the access road. The only features recorded were of medieval or post-medieval date. These comprised the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation, recorded in nearly all the trenches, which mirrored the layout of the earthworks recorded as part of an earlier walkover inspection and survey. The field systems reflected agricultural activity in the late medieval or early post-medieval period, probably relating to settlement nearby, either with the former medieval villages of Embleton or Butterwick or the farm at High Swainston. Though no finds were found in the fills of any of the furrows, two sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered from the topsoil in trench six. The evaluation of the 'platform' by trench eight revealed that it comprised a ridge of natural clay enhanced by modern ploughing. [Au(abr)] |
