Abstract: |
A desk-based study was made of land on which it was proposed to build an extension to an existing house, and a garage. Archaeological remains within the site may have included the denuded remains of a substantial linear earthwork recorded on early maps as a moat, an extant section of which to the south-west of the site was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The moat originally formed at least the south-east and north-west sides of Netley Abbey grounds, a Cistercian abbey founded in AD 1239. It was considered likely that the site was located at or near the former eastern corner of this feature. Other features associated with the abbey were likely to be present in the surrounding area.
