Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of new service trenches for the insertion of electricity cabling across Market Square. The earliest deposits encountered appeared to date to the 18th century and may have related to the demolition of town houses and their cellars. Deposits [001], [002], [003], and [010] were similar to the backfilled cellars encountered during water pipeline refurbishment along the length of King's Parade. The demolition of properties on King's Parade was part of a road widening and landscaping scheme initiated by the University in the late 18th and early 19th century. The watching brief also noted considerable disturbance to the ground from the insertion of services, the most notable of which was the brick-lined culvert located to the north of the fountain and aligned north-south.
