Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed demolition of all buildings on the site and their replacement with 16 social housing units and 6 business units with 48 private housing units above. The site was shown to have a low or low to moderate archaeological potential for all past periods of human activity. A smock mill was present on the site from before 1803 to some time before 1870. The survival of any archaeological deposits on site was likley to have been severely compromised by previous development and site clearance. The survival of any significant archaeology on the site was highly doubtful. Because of past depositional impacts it was considered unlikely that the proposed development would have any significant archaeological impact. On the basis of all the available evidence the implementation of any further archaeological mitigation measures was not recommended. [Au(adp)] |
