Abstract: |
Desk-based assesment of the proposed sites of two borrow pits identified that two brick-lined airshafts associated with 19th century gypsum mining survived at Aston Hill, along with at least one cigar-shaped gypsum pit of probable late 19th century date.Traces of ridge and furrow field systems existed over much of the Aston Hill site, and a cropmark of unknown date and function had also been recorded. At Hicken's Bridge, a number of palaeochannels and a gravel island were located. Linear cropmarks to the north east of Hicken's Bridge may have extended into the development area. Remains recorded in the surrounding area included an extensive cropmark landscape, incorporating the Neolithic Aston Cursus complex, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Romano-British settlement had also been indicated by cropmarks, and a village with medieval origins lay close to the proposal sites. A small number of Saxon inhumations had been found in the region. Traces of post-medieval industrial and agricultural activity were widespread. It was recommended that trial excavations and examination of the gypsum mines should be undertaken at Aston Hill, and that an auger survey and trial trenching should be carried out at Hicken's Bridge.
