Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service station was undertaken. Little evidence of prehistoric activity had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, although Neolithic causewayed enclosures, burial mounds and later prehistoric hillforts lay on higher ground around the Worcester plain. Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery had been found during excavation within Worcester, which may itself have originated as a Roman fort. Roman pottery and features had been found in the area, and the route of a Roman road may have crossed the site. A church which may have originated as a Saxon chapel and a medieval manorial site had also been recorded in the area. A possible ring ditch had been recorded on aerial photographs of the site itself. An archaeological evaluation was proposed, although it was noted that ploughing would probably have damaged any features present at the site. [AIP] |
