Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of an area of pasture identified that it was located on an area of high ground at the Fen edge, and that the results of nearby archaeologcal excavations had suggested that it had some potential for finds or structures relating to prehistoric activity. Romano-British artefacts had been found within the site earlier in the 20th century, and further finds of this date had been recorded in the vicinity. The study area lay within the historic settlement focus of Yaxley village, adjacent to the medieval manor house. An aerial photographic assessment identified a number of earthwork features within the site, comprising banks, ditches and the degraded remains of ridge and furrow earthworks of medieval or post-medieval date. It was recommended that a survey of the earthworks should be undertaken, that limited test-pitting should be carried out in order to examine the potential of the topsoil to contain prehistoric or Romano-British artefacts, and that the banks and a specific area between two earthwork features should be sampled by trial trenching.
