Abstract: |
Six test pits were excavated as part of an ongoing programme of research into Wells Palace and its landscape context. The stratigraphic sequence retrieved from test pit 1 suggested that the present boundary wall had a 17th or early 18th century foundation date, which complemented 18th century map evidence. In the western area, a large quantity of domestic waste retrieved from test pits 4 and 5 reflected the dumping of rubbish during the medieval/post-medieval period. The stratigraphy of test pits 3 and 6 strongly suggested that a distinct raised platform to the south of the site entirely consisted of sediment re-deposited in the 19th century and was likely a direct result of landscaping of the 1830s. It seemed likely that the area to the north west of the springs had been an open garden area since at least the mid-16th century, when John Leland indicated its usage as a 'meadow plot'. Although evidence for the medieval period was found only in test pit 4, the sample from this cutting seemed to indicate that this part of the Episcopal precinct had previously been used in a similar way.
