Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken in support for an application for planning and Scheduled Monument Consent relating to the redevelopment of the site. The site lay in an area of considerable archaeological and historical importance. The Roman and later city wall, a Scheduled Ancient Monument (26b, 26w) was thought to exist in truncated form beneath the unbasemented yard area to the east of the standing building. Remains of the Roman and medieval internal bank and later masonry foundations may have survived between the city wall and the Amen Court Wall. Indications from excavations to the south suggested that remains of Roman, Saxon and medieval defensive ditch sequences would have survived down to a maximum depth of 8m OD. [Au(abr)] |
