Abstract: |
The watching brief formed the second phase of an archaeological programme of works in mitigation of the development. The c.30m long pipe trench was located directly above the western wing of the Ilchester County Gaol as shown on the map of 1821. This part of the Gaol was demolished some time after 1846, the structural remains of which were revealed at a depth of 1.3m below the modern ground surface, and beneath deep Victorian demolition layers and subsequent make-up layers. River alluvial sediments were encountered. A small assemblage of artefacts, consisting of post-medieval and modern pottery, glass, metal, clay tobacco pipe and leather were also recovered from the watching brief. [Au(abr)] |
