Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the archaeological potential of a c.50ha tract of land in South Lynn to the south of the confluence between the Rivers Great Ouse and Nar. While derelict industrial land accounted for a high proportion of the area it also embraced parts of the waterfront and southern edge of this historic town. Development in the northern area of the site may have had an impact upon major archaeological features, including King's Lynn's Carmelite Friary, the town's 17th century defences and a series of 17th century timber framed houses, as well as archaeological deposits pertaining to the evolution and use of the waterfront area. It was possible that buried peat and other fen deposits beneath the area also had potential for studying prehistoric activity and environmental change in this part of the Norfolk fenland. [Au]
