Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed residential development site identified that a number of archaeological sites and features in the surrounding area, dating from the prehistoric, Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval periods, had been recorded on the County SMR. The proposal site itself was occupied by a Grade II Listed mill building, dated by an iron plaque to 1781. Documentary evidence suggested that the site had been consistently occupied by a water-powered mill complex since 1257, prior to which it may have formed part of a Romano-British hinterland centred on a villa esate at Eaton by Tarporley. Archaeologically significant features consisting of at least three earlier mill buildings, an iron furnace, associated watercourses and subsidiary buildings were likely to have survived within the proposal site. The 18th century structure had been damaged by fire in 1989, and part of it had since been dismantled. A series of engineering trial pits excavated at the site indicated that an area of landfill survived to a depth of 1.2m in the south-eastern part of the site. An assessment of the impact of development on the standing building revealed that of 34 elements highlighted in previous archaeological works, 20 would be retained in situ. [Au(adp)]
