Abstract:
Freton Tower was a Grade II Listed mid-16th century tower lying in the north east corner of a landscaped plateau. Directly to the south of Freston Tower lay Tower House, thought to have been of similar date and perhaps connected to the Tower. A combination of gradiometer and resistance survey was undertaken in a total of five areas with the aim of identifying any possible structural remains, which may have been associated with Freston Tower or Tower House. These geophysical surveys were part of an investigation by The Landmark Trust with regard to the future development of Freston Tower. The magnetic data was severely disturbed throughout all the survey areas, and little archaeological information could be drawn from the results. The resistance data revealed several areas of high resistance which may have been archaeologically significant. Of particular interest was a rectangular area of high resistance immediately to the south of the tower. However, it was thought that the majority of the other responses were the result of more modern changes in the landscape, rather than any significant archaeological features. No clear evidence of structural remains was identified with either technique. [Au(abr)]
