Abstract: |
The farmhouse at Old Court Farm, Bosbury, probably retains within its fabric elements of a former palace of the Bishops of Hereford. Substantial remains of the gatehouse to this palace are preserved within the southern block of farm buildings facing on to the lane leading north from the village. Plans are being developed for the conversion of the farmstead, including several hop kilns and the gatehouse, to residential use. The City of Hereford Archaeology Unit was commissioned to undertake an outline analysis of the farm buildings, as well as detailed survey work on the two sides of the former gate-passage within the gatehouse [see separate AIP entry]. CHAU was also requested to provide a desk-based assessment of the potential damage to archaeological levels as a result of the proposed development, and to suggest what mitigation measures or archaeological investigations might be required in accordance with PPG16. The residence appears to have been in use as a bishop's palace from the mid-13th century until at least 1467, though there may have been an earlier palace at Bosbury in pre-conquest times. The gatehouse has been shown to be of late 13th or early 14th century date, and Old Court Farm contains some 15th century work. There are no other buildings surviving which relate to the use of the site as a palace. Records for Bosbury indicate that it had extensive cellarage and may have been used as a hunting lodge. By the late 13th century there was a columbarium, which may have been demolished in 1884. There are some indications to the north and west that suggest that the site had, at least in part, either moated defences or a stream providing a possible defensive line. The area within which the palace and, presumably, all the ancillary buildings stood is relatively small. The positions of the many ancillary buildings, the gardens and the orchard, and of any earlier palaces, are totally unknown. They could be found in any part of the site, although the area to the south and east of the farmhouse and to the west of the gatehouse would appear to be most promising. It is possible that the remains associated with the palace are still well buried and have suffered little or no disturbance due to modern works carried out in recent years. The gatehouse is a SAM and is listed Grade II. Old Court Farmhouse is listed Grade II. |
