Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at five sites considered to have archaeological potential, along the proposed route of a bypass. Geophysical anomalies had been detected at two of the sites; during trial trenching, these were found to coincide with a recent area of burning at one of the sites, and to have probably been caused by modern ditches, a burnt stakehole and drainage pipes at the second. The walls of a post-medieval building, probably a barn, and an undated ditch were recorded at the easternmost site. Slight earthworks in one area may have represented remnants of ridge and furrow. Further earthworks may have related to the runway of a nearby Second World War airfield. An area of rubble, which may have lain adjacent to a building noted on earlier aerial photographs, was recorded at a site to the west. Artefacts recovered during the evaluation included 19th and 20th century pottery, a 19th century bottle, a possible sherd of medieval pottery and three struck flints. [AIP]
