Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of of a replacement water main between Newark and Kelham. This permitted the sampling and recording of a regionally significant Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene organic deposit, incorporating pollen, plant microfossils, molluscs, algal microfossils, insects and wood. This layer had the potential for shedding important new light upon the environment of the Trent Valley in the Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. New dates on the medieval Old Trent Dyke and one of its minor tributaries were also obtained. Further evidence was also gained concerning the development and use of the site of Newark Cattle Market before it's development in the nineteenth century. [Au] |
