Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that prehistoric activity had been recorded in the vicinity, represented by a flint scraper recovered c. 100m to the south. Further activity in the surrounding area tended to lie within 0.5 to 1.6km of the site. Several Mesolithic and Neolithic flints had been found 600m to the east. Romano-British artefacts had been recovered within the town, and a possible villa site lay to the south. Medieval activity had been recorded in close proximity to the proposal site, which was believed to have lain immediately to the north of the centre of the medieval settlement. The prehistoric to medieval remains in the area were assessed as being of local importance, but it was noted that 20th century quarrying was likely to have destroyed archaeological deposits to a depth of c. 5m throughout much of the site.
