Abstract:
Desktop assessment of land proposed for development adjacent to Bristol Bridge showed the proposal area to be of very high archaeological potential. The site mostly lay to the north of a medieval thoroughfare known as Tucker Street and to the west of the bridge that presumably gave Bristol its name (a fixed crossing was established here from 1247 although its predecessors may have lain further upstream). As the street name suggests, part of the area was a centre for tucking or fulling by the 13th century at least, and later industries included dyeing and soapmaking in the 16th and 17th centuries, and brewing, distilling, sugar-refining and warehousing were also important during the post-medieval period. Based on evidence from excavations on adjacent sites, it was suggested that there was a high potential for the survival of successive phases of land reclamation on the river frontage during the medieval period, including the construction of stone or timber revetments. The presence of quays and wharves was also thought likely due to the need to move raw materials and finished products from the businesses which once occupied the site and adjacent area. [AIP]
