Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in response to a desk-based assessment of historical cartographic sources which had shown there to be some potential for medieval deposits on the site, associated with a possible waterfront. The evaluation trenches did not reveal any positive evidence for medieval structures or finds. The sequence of deposits recorded during the investigation comprised largely nineteenth-century infilling of the backwater. The area may therefore have existed in the Middle Ages as a beach or hard, rather than as a stone or wooden quay. [Au(adp)] |
