Abstract:
This survey was undertaken as a continuation of previous work along the route of the proposed pipeline. Previous geophysical survey along the proposed route had detected a concentration of archaeological responses commensurate with a foci of settlement activity. There was no information regarding the presence of archaeological remains within Field 11. The objective of the survey was to locate any detectable archaeological remains within the 40m wide corridor of the proposed pipeline route. The detailed gradiometry detected a possible small enclosure and several linear and pit-type responses that were thought to have been of archaeological potential. Several amorphous anomalies were also recorded that were thought to have been natural in origin, possibly being former stream channels or spreads of dredging spoil from a nearby ditch. The data contained numerous linear trenches. Most of these were attributed to recent agricultural practice, although some may have had an archaeological explanation. Two ill-defined zones of increased magnetic noise were apparent within the data. It was not possible to determine whether these reflected disturbed archaeological deposits or scatters of modern debris. The data also contained areas of magnetic disturbance and ferrous anomalies. These were thought to have been modern in origin. [Au(abr)]
