Abstract: |
Archaeology had previously been identified in the vicinity of the site and previous geophysical survey had revealed a possible trackway, curvilinear ditches and pits. Cropmarks and geophysical signals were thought to represent Iron Age or Roman remains. Trial trenching revealed several Iron Age ditches and pits in the southwestern part of the site, which included parts of a possible ring gully, possibly a circular building. Roman ditches of 1st/2nd century AD date were revealed in the southern part of the site. Later Roman ditches and pits of 3rd-4th century date also occurred throughout the southern part of the site, as did a north-south aligned grave of later Roman date, containing a fragmented pottery vessel and coffin nails. Undated postholes were identified, mostly in the southwestern part of the site, one group occurred in a curvilinear arrangement possibly representing an Iron Age/Romano-British roundhouse. Medieval ditches and furrows throughout the site probably represented agricultural use. [Au(abr)] |
