Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed mixed development. The seven trenches excavated showed that a considerable depth of post-medieval and modern garden soils had accumulated with the area, overlying a medieval soil horizon, but that the density of medieval features across the site was low (a substantial stone gully in Trench F and a discrete area of cobbling and a probable soakaway in Trench A). Recommendations were made in the report that further archaeological input during the development should only have involved a watching brief to determine the extent of the gully and its relationship with an adjacent boundary wall and to check for the presence of other, probably late-medieval features, seen in Trench A.
