Abstract: |
Geotechnical trial pits were archaeologically monitored to identify areas of high archaeological potential. Proposed redevelopment consisted of retail, leisure and residential units with an underground car park. Observations from the trial pits and information recorded in the borehole logs demonstrated that the entire site was overlain by made ground of late 19th and 20th century date. The alluvial clays and gravels beneath this made ground had been severely truncated by the 19th and 20th century activity. The northern part of the site was known to have been planted with formal gardens called the Cumberland Gardens on Horwoods map of 1807 while the southern part of the site lay in open farmland at this date. Any deposits would were removed by later activity. The report recommended that there was no need for further mitigation measures. [Au(abr)] |
