Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development. Advice from the Bedfordshire County Archaeologist's Office suggested that the site lay in an area of archaeological interest, as indicated by the evidence of aerial photographs. The assessment found that there was a negligible potential for material of early prehistoric date to be found on the study site but that there was a moderate potential for rural settlement sites of Iron Age and Romano-British date. This was indicated by the presence of such sites close by, particularly on the north, south and east sides of the site. After the Roman period the site was likely to have been used for agricultural purposes until the 19th century. This would mean that after any woodland had been cleared it would have been part of the open field system of the village of Milton Ernest until enclosure in 1803. There was unlikely to have been any significant archaeological remains on the site from these periods. [Au(adp)]
