Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on a proposed car park extension, within the vicinity of the moated site at Old Thirsk. The evaluation included a geophysical survey, a topographical survey, the excavation of three trial trenches and the sinking of 26 auger holes across the site. The auger holes and topographical survey suggested that the moat was not of any great depth. It was possible that there were small buildings or enclosures outside the moat and that a bank picked up by the survey may have been part of these. The excavation trenches, placed only in the area of proposed development, failed to reveal any structural remains. Two sherds of medieval pottery were recovered. [Au(abr)] |
