Abstract: |
West Bay harbour had a complex history of development from at least the 13th century to the present day. With its associations with the ropemaking industry for the Navy Bridport Harbour, a nationally important port. By the later medieval period the harbour was effectively inoperative. Within the bay itself it has been suggested that there were remains of submerged forests. However, the demolition of the existing West Pier would result in the removal of about 70% of the listed structure. The construction of the new West Pier would also potentially have an adverse impact on any subterranean archaeological material. However, any deposits lying outside the construction area would not be disturbed and would be preserved in situ.[Au(abr)] |
