Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken along with a rapid desk-based assessment during a programme of investigation into the strength of existing, and future consolidation of, flood defence works in the parish of East Lyng; specifically the stability of Baltmoor Wall. The site was located at the east end of the village of East Lyng and followed the line of the medieval Baltmoor Wall which was described as being a bridge or causeway connecting the burh of Athelney and the burh of Lyng. The development area lay within an unofficial area of archaeological importance, with great potential being evident for the survival of early medieval and medieval remians. The watching brief consolidated the medieval date of the wall, and identified other areas of early medieval and medieval activity, although in some case exact dates were being waited on. [AIP] |
