Abstract: |
An evaluation comprising trenching, supported where appropriate by documentary research was undertaken ahead of a proposed development of two buildings and a car-parking area. Trenching on the street frontage demonstrated that Market Street was relatively undeveloped before the 18th century, however in the gardens to the rear of the property a medieval kiln was encountered. Due to the regional rarity of such kiln sites preservation in situ was recommended, although preservation by record was an option if excavations for services or foundations were to penetrate to a greater depth than 0.4m.
