Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the construction of a new public library. The site lay a short distance from the probable core of the medieval settlement around the church and Market Place. Following a severe fire in 1581 the town was re-planned and the market place lain out in its present location. A second fire, in 1679, had also caused damage of unknown extent. Surviving buildings indicted that the town extended as far south as the proposed development site by the mid-17th century. It was unclear to what extent any earlier development had occurred at the site. Consequently there was some potential for unidentified medieval and post-medieval remains to be present. Cartographic evidence suggested continual occupation of the High Street frontage of the site since mid-18th century. The potential for prehistoric, Romano-British and Saxon remains at the site was relatively low. [Au(abr)] |
