Abstract: |
A desk-based appraisal was undertaken of the archaeological implications of proposed developments. The assessment indicated that the site had an uncertain potential to contain archaeology from the prehistoric to later medieval periods. The site was located on the alluvial flood plain and any prehistoric archaeology would have been buried, with the possibility of Palaeoenvironmental and organic remains. The proposed development may impact the possible remains of the footings of a post-medieval building and a well, shown on a map of 1758. The proposed development would truncate an existing low earthwork bank, first shown on a map of 1644, along the northern edge of the site. The exact date and nature of the feature was uncertain, possibly a medieval (or earlier) track or roadway across seasonally flooded meadows. The study had suggested that the feature might have been fortified during the 17th century as part of the Civil War defences of Oxford. The feature was therefore potentially of some archaeological significance. [Au(adp)] |
