Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken on the site of the Old Shambles during resurfacing work. The full width of the road was excavated to a depth of 0.5m for a length of 27m. Refuse pits and posts for timber structures were observed. These were likely to have been associated to the Old Shambles or Beast Market, a free standing timber framed building which was probably late medieval in date and was demolished in the early 18th century. Biological samples taken were well preserved and provided a tantalising insight into the life of the medieval town. [Au(abr)] |
