Abstract:
An archaeologcial desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the determination of planning permission for the residential development of the site. The archaeological potential for the early prehistoric period was identified as being low to moderate as no Palaeolithic or Mesolithic artefacts had been recorded within 500m of the site. The archaeological potential for the later prehistoric periods was identified as moderate to good as two Neolithic axes and an undated flint artefact had been found in the immediate vicinty of the site. In situ prehistoric remains were felt, however, only likely to occur on the east of the site in association with a 'peaty' deposit identified in a geotechnical investigation. The archaeological potential of the study site for the Roman period was defined as low to moderate. Artefacts of Roman date may occur in association withi the 'peaty' deposit on the east of the site. The archaeologcial potential of the site for all other past periods of human activity was defined as low. The survival of any archaeological deposits on site was unlikely to have been severely compromised by modern land use and development; though localised areas of severe truncation had been identified in the geotechnical report. The report recommended that a programme of archaeological evaluation be undertaken prior to the development. [Au(adp)]
