Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of drain and service trenches around Babington House. A possible palaeo-channel was revealed, and several large ditches containing medieval pottery were recorded. All but one of the ditches seemed to have been associated with the site of the present house. Medieval pottery finds were also concentrated within the area of the manor house and church. A possibly medieval oak post and a subsequent post-hole were observed in the base of a deep trench cut within a barn. A sharply-curving gully ran from the post-hole. Post-medieval features comprised eight stone culverts, two limestone walls, a possible drive and a water collection chamber. It was concluded that the medieval manor house had lain beneath the site of the present house, with the medieval village situated immediately to the south, and that pottery sherds suggested that the settlement dated from the 12th century.
