Abstract: |
An small auger survey of along the Thames foreshore to the south of Hungerford Bridge was undertaken in response to engineering works for the Flood Mitigation Phase 3 project. Previously archaeolgoical deposits had been identified outcropping at various points along the City foreshore as the process of erosion exposed earlier material. Fieldwalking as well as excavation of small hand dug trenches had already been carried out. The survey revealed the level of the natural gravels gradually falling towards the river. Deposits above the gravels, sealed by the modern aggregate, comprised a typical alluvial sequence of silts, but no peats were observed. This suggested that this material may not be prehistoric, and a medieval date seemed most likely on comparative grounds alone. No definitive dating evidence was recovered. [Au(abr)] |
