Abstract: |
Recording occurred during refurbishment of the College's Halls and Kitchen. The work arose as a result of planning conditions relating to the Listed Buildings' fabric and, therefore, was largely architectural. However, the opportunity was taken to record a contractor's service pit and a small sondage was excavated within the Outer Court, part of a continuing campaign of College investigation. During refurbishment, the wooden panels which surrounded the lower walls of the Hall were temporarily removed. Although specifically commissioned to record a large fireplace exposed within the north wall, whilst on-site the opportunity arose for more 'casual' recording of the behind-panel fabric. Recordings were also made of two elevations of the ground storey Kitchen block and two in the Upper Hall. Also observed, in the corner between the Hall and Kitchen, was a substantial early footing. The sondage cut in the Outer Court produced a large number of medieval and post-medieval finds, along with evidence of mortar surfaces in the supposedly open-area of the Court, challenging accepted tenets of the College's history.
