Abstract:
A phased programme of standing building survey, documentary research and excavation at the "Hotties" Science and Arts Centre development in St Helens was undertaken between 1991 and 1997. The core of the development was a Grade II* Listed tank house located within the former Pilkington Brothers' Jubilee Sheet Glass Works. The structure had been purpose-built in 1887 for the manufacture in continuous tank furnaces of blown cylinder glass. Work during the first three phases, up until 1994, had involved recording the standing fabric of the building, and two intensive campaigns of excavation. These revealed the surviving base level remains of the 'working end' of a continuous tank furnace with all of its regenerator tunnels and gas supply tunnels still largely intact. Such well-preserved remains were a rare survival from an age of rapid technological development within the glass industry which had been marked by short-lived innovative design. A programme of repair works, new build requirements and additional excavation was completed between 1995 and mid-1997 as part of the initial preparations for the development scheme. All of this work was monitored and recorded archaeologically. [Au(abr)]
