Abstract: |
Following the recommendations of the desktop assessment and the results of observations on geotechnical test pits, four evaluation trenches were excavated on the site. The results of the field evaluation had helped to refine the initial assessment of the archaeological potential of the site. The proposed redevelopment was to demolish Riddell House and build a new children's hospital on the site. The construction of the new building would remove all archaeological deposits within its footprint. In the light of revised understanding of the archaeological potential of the site, the report concluded that the impact of the proposed redevelopment was likely to be minimal. The bulk of deposits consisted of 'made ground' probably dating to the construction of Riddell House. Therefore it was likely that only features cut into the natural gravel would have a chance of survival. [Au(abr)] |
