Abstract: |
The major part of the site was situated on land progressively reclaimed from the foreshore between 1574 and 1678. At least one house was present on the Castle Street frontage by 1602. The reclamation deposits were themselves of potential archaeological interest. It was thought that the three coal-fired boilers constructed for the original Electricity work may have been located at the Commercial Road end of the site. Their foundations, and other deep excavations across the site, were likely to have removed earlier deposits and reclamation material. Earlier residual material associated with the nearby castle or evidence of early quays may have survived. [Au(adp)] |
